Nile River

The Nile River is according to some is the second cleanest stream in the world, because of its filtering through the marshes on the top of Ben Lomond. If you have the 1:25000 map of Evandale the turnoff is on the edge of the map then you are on the map Stacks. The road runs along side the Nile River till it crosses a cemented section over the river. It is very rocky and if you walk up the river its is rock pools for quite some distance but I don’t know how far. Some logging is happening in the area and roads leading of this unnamed road have gates. Then as the road crosses the Nile on the map the road is called Fishers Tier Road. It’s a steep climb up to Fishers Saddle. On some maps the road stops and other maps  it continues to  Gipps Creek  an old mining area near Rossarden. On this road at the moment a gate is erected as logging is underway. The views of Ben Lomond  are magnificent as you are driving right under the southern outcrop of the famous National Park looking up at Stack Bluff. As the club went through this area in the late 1990s I do believe the track has fallen trees across at the eastern end as it curls  through forest which has been logged and the track has been changed because of this. But we have found old mining tracks which did lead us onto the old Gipps Creek Road and came out besides Little Dam Marsh. This track and area needs some more attention from the club to update this report. Its steep, rocky very overgrown but the views and isolation are unbelievable. Also a gate is reported to be erected stopping access.

                                             Mt. Rex Hill

This unnamed track on 1:25000 map Stanhope enters the bush at an intersection were the Gipps Creek road also leaves the Rossarden Road just south of Rossarden. Looking up at a high hill power lines disappear into the bush with a track running besides. Following this track will take you to the Rex Hill Mine. Into the mine for a look then turning around heading out the same track for only fifty to a hundred meters take a track headed south. It will soon be passing someone's back yard. Onto a big wide road head east, as if you go right here it’s a private coal mine reserve. Heading left it will be very dusty till you hit the main sealed road. It’s a slow going, twisting, watching overhead branches as you will need four wheel drive to straddle some rocky track as well as sand. Rex Hill Mine  started about 1891with a number of different operators till 1935. Silver lead mined first then tin later in the life of the mine. Water races were used from Buffalo Creek as an old track can be found to drive to, four wheel drive is needed. Watch out for extra deep holes in this area. Very interesting to the explorer four wheeler. Water races in the bush. Watch children deep holes..
